Time for wine at ‘Vina Castellano’ Winery – one of the very best in the foothills on your way to Lake Tahoe!!
On my way to Lake Tahoe, it was recommended to me to stop by Vina Castellano winery in Auburn, Ca., not only because of their great red wines, but the grounds are beautiful with a large pond and outdoor seating that is more than welcoming. It’s a very charming place and the staff are absolutely delightful!
It was great to meet with Lisa Duron, the Wine Tasting Room Manager. She told me that this is a spanish winery, founded by Gabe Mendez 25 years ago. All wines are estate grown. Gabe and his daughter, Teena, are committed to the idea that Mediterranean varietals from Spain, Italy and the South of France will secure the Sierra Foothills and Placer County for the years to come.
They received ‘Best of Class’ from the San Francsico Chronicle for their, ‘Tempranillo’ wine. This is Spains #1 wine grape. I sampled it and it is ‘fantastic’! The Stone Barrel Cave and Tasting room is fabulous. The rocks are natural. This cave took 2 years to build. Many events are held in this Cave.
As I remember, it was the wineries, 1st Fall Festival. Vendors selling jewelry, crafts, candles, etc. were represented. Also a food truck was present. Seating was all around the pond and on nice tables with umbrellas. Even a special no-host bar! Pumpkins and a bounce house were available for the kids, who definitely kept busy!
