2013 Del Mar Racetrack, Del Mar, California

I decided to take a ride down to the beautiful town of Del Mar, located in San Diego County and do a review of the famous Del Mar Racetrack. Hollywood Park Racetrack where I went with my grandfather over 30 years ago is closing its doors in 2014. There will more than likely be lots more races expected to run at Del Mar Racetrack.

Del Mar Racetrack opened in 1937. Bing Crosby and other celebrities, like Pat O’Brien and Gary Cooper formed a partnership as co-founders . It’s an American thoroughbred horse racing track. By 1940, it became a summer playground to many Hollywood stars. To this day, there is beauty and glamour that pervades the grounds. The demographics due to social media has attracted a more youthful and fashionable audience. I noticed lots of women in lovely hats and summer dresses, just like those worn by the famous movie star, Audrey Hepburn in the movie, ‘My Fair Lady’, when she herself adorned the racetracks in beautiful fashion.

The day I went, there were 11 races. The races start at 2p.m. It was a beautiful day with lots of people in attendance. I stood on the deck from the Press room after meeting Daniel Smith, Senior Media Coordinator.

Not having been to the races in many years, I found myself getting absolutely addicted to this pastime. You can visit the Del Mar Racetrack during the months of July – September. The Amtrak and Coaster trains take you to Solana Beach, where you can ride the free shuttle buses to the racetrack.

Check into the Del Mar Summer Concert Series!  Attend the concerts after the last race of the day!  I will be back to ‘Where the Turf meets the Surf’ at the beautiful Del Mar races at the fairgrounds. ‘Happy racing!’ You can visit their website at: www.dmtc.com for more information.
